Two more neckties

Two more neckties:  the first was from 31 Oct, and the other was from Friday (yesterday).

As I've mentioned before, I like to push the boundaries as far as what "goes together".  Wearing a patterned tie with a plain shirt, or a plain tie with a patterned shirt, isn't very interesting.

The second is often my "Friday shirt":  the pattern is of eucalyptus tree flowers.  I reasoned that the pink in the flowers corresponds to the pink in the necktie.  And maybe it does.

It probably helps that no one except the grand-high boss actually wears neckties (Queensland is a fairly casual state).  So the fact that I'm actually wearing a necktie is a "bonus".

Three more neckties

I collect neckties -- so I wear 'em to work (most of the other men don't).

It's accidental that these three all feature red or pink neckties:  most of my neckties are blue, green, or black.

My necktie of the day

The kids have a school concert tonight.  Parents are supposed to dress in black and white.

Rather than wear a different necktie at work and in the evening, I just wore the pictured necktie.

I kinda like how the grey (silver?) in the necktie matches the grey (silver?) in my hair.

As you know, I collect neckties.  And since I collect them, I figure I ought to wear them.

They're all from thrift stores -- or or gifts or hand-me-downs from older relatives.

The vest (first photo) used to be my dad's:  my mom made it for him -- probably back in the '70s.


The first photo isn't a shirt-and-tie combo:  it's a "patterned shirt with a differently-patterned vest" combo.  But dicey nonetheless.

I collect neckties -- so I figure I ought to wear them.  So I wear them to work (hardly any of my co-workers do so).

Also:  Here's a shirt I decorated myself.  It was a simple white "dress shirt" -- but it got a stain.  So I "Eddie van Halen-ed" it up with some masking tape and spraypaint.

Patriotic necktie

Yesterday was the Fourth of July.  Back home in Seattle, I probably wouldn't "flag up" -- but since I'm the only American at my workplace, I figured "what the heck".

Some neckties

I enjoy -- and collect neckties.  Since I have them, I tend to wear them to work (only the "big boss", and his personal assistant, wear neckties -- besides me).

Rather than playing it safe, I try to push the boundaries of "what actually 'goes together'":  wearing a colored, patterned tie against a white or a black shirt would just be too easy...!!!

My outfit

The outfit I wore to work today.

I received several compliments on the tie and/or vest. I told everyone that my mommy made them for my daddy 30 years ago. Although a co-worker pointed out it would be more like "40 years ago".

I think the hat used to be my paternal grandfather's.  But I'm not sure.

More ties

Even though my sister-in-law, who lives next door, is my age, she doesn't have any parents left.  And that's pretty crummy.

But that's not the point of this post.

Her dad died about a year ago, and a few weeks ago she mentioned to me that somewhere she has a few ties from him.  When she came across them she'd give them to me, as her husband doesn't really wear ties.

And now she found 'em.

They're pictured above.  Four bow ties (gotta learn how to tie them!!!), and five ''regular'' neckties.

I'll wear each of the neckties during the next week or two, and them mix them into the regular rotation.  I forget how many ties I have, total.  50?  60?  Dunno.

Final two ties

Oh, BTW -- Wednesday and Thursday of this last week were my final two neckties out of my collection. (For those new to this blog: I have about 85 neckties, and I've been systematically wearing one per day (except Fridays) until I've worn each tie once.)

So: Monday -- any tie I want! Woo-hoo!!!


Here's my second-to-last tie: electric guitars and electric basses. Received it as a gift (either from my wife, or my kids) a few years back, and never worn it (still in the plastic).



Here's my final tie: a red (or burgandy?) bow tie -- an actual tie-it-yerself bow tie. Unfortunately, although I understand theoretically how to tie a bow tie (it's basically like tying your shoes), I didn't think to practice ahead of time. So after a few tries in the men's room in front of the mirror, I gave up. But, here it is.


So: them's the ties. :)

Family ties

Today, while next door borrowing a DVD from my brother-in-law, I somehow ended up talking with his wife about my necktie collection. She mentioned that when her father died she inherited some neckties, and that her husband doesn't really wear ties: would I like them?

Sure!


So, I gained eight additional neckties (pictured).

I had eight ties in the queue that I have yet to wear: since I don't wear a tie on ''casual Fridays'', that's two weeks before I've worn all my ties once. With these additional seven, that's fifteen ties. So, nearly four week (esp. since I occasionally leave the house without a tie).


Once I've worn each tie once, then I can start wearing whichever ones I feel like.

My most expensive tie ever

The weekend before Mother's Day, I went to an antique mall that we used to go to, to find some gifts for The Lady. Came across this tie (see photo). Twenty bucks: the most expensive tie that I've ever bought.

Hemmed and hawed over it. Finally decided to get it, because it's paisley (I like paisley), and a **really** nice color of blue. And because I knew that I'd regret not getting it, and probably have to make a special trip back to get it.


By the way: I know that it looks like I've suspended the tie over a toilet bowl. But it's just a sink.


Speaking of ties: I'm still doing my "one tie a day at work, never repeating". Started doing this at the end of January.

As of a few days ago, I had about 40 ties left. Now that I'm not wearing ties on "casual Fridays", that's four ties a week. So, I still have ten weeks of tie-wearing before I start repeating myself.


That's a lotta ties.
