Day three plus one of working from home

I have a small stash of CDs at work that I listen to during the day -- but of course, most of my CDs are at home.

Now that I'm working from home, I thought I'd start to go through all the CDs that I've been keeping in the hopes that "maybe one day my tastes will change".  But now that I'm thoroughly middle-aged, I know they won't.

In four days, I've gone through a shoebox sized stack of CDs:  I'm keeping 30-40%, and will give away the other 60-70%.  Nothing wrong with the CDs:  they're just not "catchy" enough for me, or too deeply into a genre that I'm only somewhat into (e.g. I like some hip-hop; I like some metal....).

I estimate I have 19 "bins" (let's call them; 1 bin is about 2 shoeboxes) of CDs to review: this is only the "ambiguous" ones, and excludes the CDs that I know I like.

I've processed half a bin in four workdays. So that's one bin in eight workdays. 

So it should take me about 152 workdays to process all 19 bins.

Five workdays in a workweek.  So that's 30.4 weeks.

It's three-fifths (i.e .60%, or 0.6 of a week) through the current workweek.  So, by this weekend I'll have about 30 weeks remaining.

If I've browsed the calendar correctly, that's Friday, Oct 30th.


Hopefully we'll be released by then...


And:  that could be an over-estimate.

Everyone is at home

Today is a test “learn from home” day for my kids (all of them have school-issued laptops).  My daughter is at her desk in her bedroom, doing some sort of group voice chat with her friends on her mobile (as she works on a graphic design task); one son (B1) is propped up in his bed, typing on his laptop; and the other (B2) has somehow commandeered our bed, as is typing from there.


I have a dual-monitor PC from work (with the appropriate statistical software installed), and am set up at the end of the kitchen table:  my first day of officially working from home (just like everyone else on my floor at work).

The Lady has her usual work laptop, but hasn't yet claimed a location:  probably on the bed next to B2. 

So far, no apparent adverse impacts on our household bandwidth (despite being non-NBN).  :)

Shirts and NonEdible batteries

Today I was working from home, while The Lady had the boys out at B2's pre-emptive speech therapy.

A few hours later, I got a panicked call from her: B2 had managed to get open his hearing aids, removed the batteries (little disc-like watch batteries) - and only one was accounted for! Both boys are only two years old, so you can't really quiz them: when asked where the other battery went, **both** pointed into their open mouths.

Eating those batteries are bad: if they get stuck somewhere in your digestive tract, they start leaking, and destroy your insides.

So: from about 11am to 2pm, we camped out in the emergency room. Both boys had x-rays; neither boy had anything of interest in their insides -- so, the mythical "second battery" must be in the parking lot -- probably wedged in someone's tire tread by now.

We went straight from the E.R. to pick up The Girl from school, and went directly to her piano lesson. So, I didn't get a lot done that afternoon.


On the plus side: I had to occupy the boys for 45 minutes, so we walked down the block and I hit the local op shop ("opportunity shop" - what Aussies call thrift stores). All of my "around the house"/"yard t-shirts" are of about the same vintage, so they're all starting to fall apart at the same time. I **do** have "nice" t-shirts -- but those are for wearing out and about, where people can appreciate their wit.

So, I went in, and picked up four t-shirts, for an average of AU$6 each (about US$5?). Tried to get non-offensive things: so, no bikini babes or "getting drunk is kewl". Instead, one has a car (wearing it now!), one has some sport team name (which I've never heard of), one's a bizarre green, and one's from some boat sales place.

I **could've** gone to some discount clothing store and picked up some new shirts for a similar price. But, these were of good material, 100% cotton, and USED (reuse, reduce, recycle...). Plus, the proceeds go to charity.


Actually, the greeny-brown one with the orange print of a car possibly **does** have a bikini babe sitting on the hood. But the drawing is small, crackly, and just not very good -- so it's not really clear: it could be a skinny lumpy guy in a hazmat suit.

Australian Fathers Day

(Again, I've intentionally omitted the apostrophe from this blog's title: it generates a weird character code in the URL.)

Today was Father's Day in Australia, and the photo to the left has very little to do with what I did today. Except that it's a photo of me.

Lovely weather today (and yesterday) -- springtime-y. Wish I could've done some yardwork, or maybe puttered around in the shed, or did some yardwork. Instead, logged a lot of hours cleaning this data for work. Ah well -- getting near done.

The kids gave me a bunch of things they made at school/daycare. Cute! Also a book on tools.

The Lady gave me a few things, including two Steve Irwin DVDs and a roofer's hatchet.


Father's Day, so dealer's choice for dinner. I ordered pizza. Two larges are about right for us -- but I ordered three, in order to wrangle some leftovers.


All in all, a good day. Lotsa hugs. :)


I probably **should** stay up 'til 2am or so to work on this data -- but, dagnabit!, it's Father's Day. So I'm calling it quits at midnight. Plus or minus two hours isn't gonna ruin my timeline. ;)
