Kids and evolution

Was talking to a colleague today, who as a 14yo daughter. Apparently, teenagers can be... difficult.

My thought: maybe it's an evolutionary thing. Teenagers are a pain in the patootie, so that when it's time for them to leave home, you're more willing to let them go.

Could be. :)

(My children, of course, will be wonderful!) ;)

From what I understand, stages of maturation differ by culture. It's possible that it's evolutionary, but I think it may be more complicated.

timidvenus: Yep! :) As I recall, you have a kid. If she's a pain as a teen, I suppose you can take comfort...

Slag: Oh, you know it. As a card-carrying sociologist, I'm inherently biased towards "nurture" over "nature" explanations. Which leads to some juicy debates with Guitar Cousin, the Psych. major... :)

Or perhaps they're not objectively any more of a pain than when they're 2 and filling your DVD player with oatmeal because it's "hungry". Perhaps it just our expectations that change. They lose some of their innate cuteness, and we feel that the closer someone is to adulthood the less of a problem they should be.

GG and Slag: Actually, it's clearly the way teenage hormones interact with the pre-frontal cortex that's responsible. :)
