Wisdom for the morning

The t.v. show How I Met Your Mother has an episode which is based around a saying of Ted's mother's:  "Nothing good ever happens after 2am."


I think I've developed my own variation on that:

-Don't make life-changing decisions at four in the morning.

-Don't do dubious (questionable?) things without first conferring with someone.


Sorry, I'm not at liberty to explain.  Unless you live in Eugene, Oregon.

Very good Saturday

Usually, weekends are my "getting things done around the house" days.

But, I was recently given the final season of How I Met Your Mother on DVD.  So I spent all of Saturday lying in bed with some of my kids while watching the final two-and-a-half disks of the season.  Didn't change out of my pajamas.  Didn't leave the house (except to go out on the porch:  once to help The Lady bring in the groceries; and again to put some recycling in the bin).

My only concessions to productivity were to take the recycling out; empty the dishwasher and put on a new load of dishes; and put on a new load of laundry.  Oh -- and show the boys how to fold laundry:  they occasionally put laundry away for money.


So:  a good day!  :)

Rotating desktop

Every day for the last fortnight or so (''two weeks'', for you Yanks), I've put a new photo on my computer ''desktop'' at work. I do a Google image search, choose the pic I like, and ''save as'' to my desktop.

I started off doing bands that I like: Devo, Buddy Holly, The Smithereens, The Cars, Material Issue...

Then I did actors: Jackie Chan, Jimmy Durante, the Marx Brothers.

Then t.v. shows: Burn Notice, Cupid, Joan of Arcadia.


I found it interesting that none of my co-workers could identify Jimmy Durante or the Marx Brothers. Maybe they didn't make it across the pond...

A productive weekend

Saturday and Sunday were productive -- but in different ways.


Did the usual errands and groceries on Saturday. Forget what I did in the afternoon (besides a load or two of laundry) -- but spent a few hours in the evening watching two discs worth of Season 1 of The Big Bang Theory (borrowed from my brother-in-law). I had some other stuff I meant to do that evening -- but figured lying in bed with my sweetie and laughing together was also important.


Today, went to church, then came home and did a bunch of miscellaneous. Did a perimeter check of the entire house, for termite trails up the sides of the bricks. Supposed to do this quarterly, but I haven't. Also unpacked three boxes of "miscellaneous" from the front porch -- still have about eight boxes to go -- boxes untouched from when we moved in.

Also finished sawing a small log in half, to minimize splittage as is dries. Eventually, I use that wood as lumber for some woodworking project or another.

Also sawed off another limb off a dead tree that I need to take down. The wood in an interesting color, so I'm saving the wood for future projects (see above).

I also converted a one-person crosscut saw into a **very** long rip saw. The teeth still need a bit of tidying, though. I'll post more about this when I finish (perhaps next week?).

And then: just before the kids' bedtime, **finally** (been trying for three days) got to play guitar with some effects pedals. The kids tweaked the knobs, while I played misc. on the guitar.

Oh: and cranked through about four loads of laundry today.


So: a very productive weekend. No additional trench digging, or shifting of gravel. Probably next weekend.


Also tonight, will take a look at a friend's small business data, to look for patterns.

One of the saddest

Follow up to my post from about two days ago: this is one of the saddest episodes from the short-lived t.v. series Cupid.

Still totally worth a watch, though.

And again: "yay!" to YouTube. Maybe these will get enough web hits that the studios will finally release the series (sadly, only one season...) to DVD. The studios get some money; fans get decent screen resolution; everybody wins.

The best of the best

This is possibly my favorite episodes of one of my all-time favorite t.v. shows: "The Linguist" (yay, YouTube!), from the t.v. show Cupid.

Some of my formerly favorite t.v. shows (e.g., The Greatest American Hero) haven't aged well -- or maybe **I** haven't aged well. But Cupid still tickles me to death.

This was episode two of a really promising t.v. series that, sadly, only lasted one season -- possibly because its fast-paced, witty dialogue was not accompanied by a laugh track. Even sadder, it's not available on DVD. I'm waiting for Jeremy Piven to get **super** famous, so that the t.v. studios drag from the vaults everything he's ever been in and dump it all onto DVD.
