Decorum in chuch
Not surprisingly, church services --Lutheran and Anglican ones, at least -- contain a lot of symbolism. One portion is called ''the sharing of the peace'', where everyone goes around shaking hands and saying "Peace be with you", and engaging in some quick chit-chat before the next portion of the service. Some of the older ladies also give a quick hug, and maybe a peck on the cheek.
Today, the lady sitting in front of us mentioned -- with a touch of disappointment in her voice -- that she'd read in the church bulletin that someone had asked that during the sharing of the peace that there be no more embracing and kissing.
"Well", I said, "At least not with tongue."
She was amused.
But, maybe you had to be there.

i thought it was funny.
that is the kinda thing i'd do in church (Roman Catholic) during peace, except I am sure it wouldn't be amusing to whoever I said it to.
then my wife would yell at me later.
I remember doing this as a kid and then going outside and watching people practically run people over in the parking lot. Apparently, the peace was fleeting.
And yes, kinda funny.
My boyfriend is Presbyterian. For all their laid-back ways, they actually don't do a "sharing of the peace" or anything like it during service. (He would say that they don't need to -- they'll just talk as they play frisbee...) We went to a Lutheran church (the first time for him) for Easter, and he was shocked when everybody started talking and shaking hands during the service.
I'm surprised that lady wasn't shocked at your statement. You didn't say if your wife reprimanded you.... I think I would've said, "Ewwwwwwwww!"
re: Giovanni's comment:
Good comedy is based on timing -- and knowing your audience. :)
(Imagine saying it to BBQ...)
